Our Journey Since 2018
Founded in 2018 in the heart of Austin's silicon hills, Tech Skills Lab began as a small coding bootcamp with a unique vision. While other institutions focused on high-volume lectures, our founder Marcus Thorne recognized that true engineering skill is forged in the laboratory. We started with just ten students in a shared workspace on Congress Avenue, focusing on the fundamentals of network security and systems administration.
Over the past five years, we have undergone a rapid transformation. What began as a local initiative has expanded into a national technical hub, offering specialized tracks in Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Cloud Architecture. We have consistently refined our curriculum to keep pace with the evolving demands of the global technology landscape, moving from monolith architectures to distributed microservices and serverless infrastructure.
In 2021, we achieved a significant milestone by receiving official registration from the Texas Workforce Commission. This accreditation validated our commitment to providing rigorous, industry-aligned education. Since then, we have certified over 12,000 professionals who now work at some of the world's most influential technology firms. Our growth has been fueled by a single principle: that technical education must be as dynamic and challenging as the industry it serves.

Marcus Thorne
Founder & CEO
With over two decades of experience in software engineering and systems architecture, Marcus Thorne founded Tech Skills Lab to address the growing gap between traditional education and industry requirements. Before starting the Lab, Marcus served as a Principal Engineer at several Fortune 500 companies, where he witnessed firsthand the struggles of new hires to adapt to complex, live production environments.
Marcus is a frequent speaker at technology conferences and a passionate advocate for hands-on, mentor-led technical training. He personally oversees the development of our Cloud Architecture track and remains deeply involved in student mentorship, ensuring that the founding vision of pragmatic mastery remains at the core of everything we do.
